Matthew Edwards and the Unfortunates are a 6 piece group based in San Francisco.

English transplant Matthew Edwards was formerly the singer and songwriter with acclaimed Le Grand Magistery recording artists The Music Lovers ('Matthew Edwards is quite probably the best songwriter in the world' – Big Takeover). The band released 3 albums and an EP. Matthew dissolved the group in the fall of 2009.

After a long sabbatical from music Matthew began putting together a new group the Unfortunates (named after the BS Johnson novel). He enlisted Sasha Bell on piano and organ formerly of Essex Green and Ladybug Transistor (Merge): Award-winning cellist/vocalist Adaiha McAdam-Somer; Drummer Kristina Vukic. Bassist Jefferson Marshall (also of Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound). On accordion is Matthew's former compadre from The Music Lovers Isaac Bonnell.

On the album the Unfortunates are joined on electric guitar by Fred Frith (Henry Cow, Eno, Robert Wyatt etc.). The record is produced by Eric Drew Feldman (Cpt Beefheart, P.J. Harvey) who also plays pump organ and mellotron.

Matthew and/or the group have shared bills with Joanna Newsom, Richard Buckner, St Etienne, Circulus, Broadcast, Devendra Banhart and Camera Obscura.

Here’s what Matthew has to say about ‘The Fates’

‘The Fates is post-divorce, post-car crash and post-dreams: A love song to the listless. A black-humored chronicle of a place and a time not so long ago in my past. Of nights spent walking and drinking alone.
