2010-RELEASES

2010 "When We First Met" is a peppy tale of enduring love and, um, hair growth. Among ukeleles and twinkling pianos, the song starts out with lead singer Forrest Kline gently ruminating on the passing of days while keeping tabs on his lover's follicular activity. Blending all the wholesome strummy goodness of Buddy Holly and a catchy-as-heck powerpop chorus — with a thumping glam rock drum break as the glue — "When We First Met" is the key ingredient to your next spontaneous loungeroom dance party!

The single's B-side, meanwhile, is a far more downbeat affair. "Not Ever Coming Home" is a plaintive ballad, set amongst the first falling leaves of autumn. With a bridge section that's equal parts Shins and Bacharach, the song is like a mantric guide to persisting through a slow, fledgling romance.

Recorded as usual in Forrest's Phantom Tollbooth home studio, When We First Met sees Hellogoodbye's sound refined somewhat, more akin to the classic melodies and warm indiepop flavours of the band's recent single "The Thought That Gives Me the Creeps" than the autotune and big production of mega-hit "Here (In Your Arms)" from their 2006 album Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!
