Monk’s music is predominant in the soundtrack of the movie, however only the sessions played by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers were issued by Fontana.

The project

In 2014, we had the chance to get in touch with Marcel Romano’s close relatives (Marcel Romano passed away in 2007) and locate some of Marcel’s production archives. Among these archives we found several reel-to-reel tapes of the 27 July 1959 recording session that we thought lost forever. We have since gathered many documents and information related to this session: photos, press articles, posters and illustrations.

Considering our combined work experiences in the jazz record field, we believe that we are in a position to propose the highest quality products both in contents and presentation in order to meet the expectations of very demanding customers. With this aim in mind, we intend to work with the most qualified authors, graphic artists, studios and printers…

The Music

The session took place on 27 July 1959 at Nola’s Penthouse on 57th street with Tommy Nola as sound engineer and Marcel Romano as artistic director. Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter and Nellie Monk were also present during the recording. The band gathered for this session was unique, due to the addition of French saxophonist Barney Wilen to Monk’s usual quartet at the time, including: Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The existence of a ¼’’ stereo master tape shows that a 12’’-LP was planned to be issued in France by Fontana (a Philips subsidiary).
